JPG vs WebP: Which Is Better for Your Website?

Published

WebP is a newer image format designed for the web. It often produces smaller files than JPG at similar quality, which helps pages load faster.

The short answer

For images on your own website, WebP is usually the better choice. For sharing files with people, printing or older software, JPG is the safer choice.

File size

At comparable visual quality, WebP files are commonly around a quarter to a third smaller than JPG. The exact saving depends on the image.

Compatibility

All current major browsers display WebP. Some older apps, email clients, print services and image editors may not open it, while JPG works almost everywhere.

Features

WebP supports transparency, which JPG does not, and can also be used for animation. JPG is photo-only and does not support either.

How to convert

Use the JPG to WebP converter to create WebP versions of your photos, and the Image Compressor to fine-tune size. Also see JPG vs PNG for a comparison with PNG.
